Lab Skills Performance Assessments in Chemistry
Thursday February 6, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST
The use of performance assessments in the chemistry laboratory present unique opportunities for formative assessment. They are authentic ways for students to demonstrate their abilities and can positively affect students’ attitudes toward the lab, their academic achievement, and upon the overall environment of the classroom. When used in conjunction with student self-assessment checklists performance assessments can also promote metacognitive activity. This session will present how to administer performance assessments of five basic lab skills and the benefits to the classroom that result. The lab skills that will be discussed are measuring mass using an electronic balance, measuring volume using a graduated cylinder, lighting a Bunsen burner, measuring volume using a pipet, and completing one trial of a titration. Although this session focuses on high school chemistry, the ideas discussed could easily be adapted to the physics, biology or general science classroom.

This presentation is an overview of an action research project on the effects of having students mark their own formative quizzes upon their level of metacognition, attitude and academic achievement. In addition, the reliability of student self-grading, and the potential benefits upon the instructor’s time were also evaluated. Come to this session to hear about how this action research was conducted and the takeaways from this project.

Unlocking the Vault: Secrets of Exemplary Football Programs in Alberta
Thursday February 6, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
Through a two year study, McIntyre discovered 5 concepts that resonated through the exceptional football programs of the Raymond Comets, St. Francis Browns of Calgary, Calgary Dinosaurs (80s) , Edmonton Huskies (60s) and Edmonton Eskimos (50s). These programs had a profound impact on the individuals and the communities they served. After interviewing close to one hundred people, Ron acquired an appreciation for the nuances of these highly successful teams. Through storytelling and examples, Ron will unlock the vault and reveal the practices of men such as Gary Deman, Peter Connellan, Dennis Kadatz and Normie Kwong. It is McIntyre’s belief that the best practices of these exemplar programs are timeless and have implications for the classroom as coaching and teaching are intricately intertwined.

Price: $7.00
Capacity: 40
***Please be aware: anyone who has marked this session on their schedule without purchasing an Eventbrite ticket will be removed.***

There will always be foods we love and foods we do not enjoy, but how we talk about them is a valuable skill. Being able to articulate and explain our palates can help us get away from saying things like “that is gross”, “weird”, or “disgusting”, especially when we look at food from a cultural perspective. In this session, we will work on our tasting skills with a guided tasting activity of three different cultural foods to build our capacity for directing student language. Participants will need to have an open mind and be willing to try new things!

Food Context - Understanding Food From Multiple Perspectives
Friday February 7, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
Looking to dive deeper into the history of our food landscape? As a foods teacher, one of the critical skills I look to build is a richer understanding of the food we eat, and the food system we participate in. In this session we will look at three ways(weekly routine, personal reflection, and larger project) to incorporate food exploration as a classroom activity. This session is geared towards senior high school foods classrooms, but teachers in social or junior high may find some of the activities useful as well!
