Resurrecting a Rural Band Program
Friday February 7, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST
Over the last 7 years, my rural gr. 7-12 band program has been through the wringer: I was the third band teacher in three years, then junior high band was scheduled only once a week, and finally the COVID-19 pandemic hit. With that being said, I have had my work cut out for me to rebuild it from the ground up. In the last three years, I’ve had more students taking part in band than I’ve seen in my time at my school. Come spend some time with me and I’ll share with you what has worked in my situation and we can brainstorm ideas for your programs.

The Eras Tour (Elementary Art Version)
Friday February 7, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
Are you “…Ready For It?” Teaching art, especially in elementary can be a struggle that many know “All Too Well”. Join me as I share ideas and ways that I not only make Art engaging, but also cross-curricular, theme based, and full of exploring. We’ll take a deep dive into the elements of art—line, shape, color, texture, form, space, and value. These foundational concepts will be discussed and broken down in ways to help children feeling empowered and able to express themselves creatively. Whether it’s through a “Blank Space” of a blank canvas or a “Love Story” of their unique ideas, you’ll find strategies to nurture and celebrate every individual’s artistic journey. And what better way to inspire creativity than by drawing parallels to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour? Just as Swift has reinvented herself through different musical styles and eras, you’ll learn how to help your students explore various artistic “eras” and mediums. Whether it’s a “Red” vibrant paint project, a “Folklore” of subdued tones, or a “Reputation” of bold, striking sculptures, you'll discover how to keep your art lessons fresh and exciting. Join us and let’s make art education a thrilling adventure—one that leaves both you and your students excited to “Change” the way art is taught and learned.

The Sailing of the St. Louis
Friday February 7, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
In May, 1939 the St. Louis set sail from Hamburg, Germany. Her destination was Cuba, and her cargo was 937 Jewish immigrants. Each holding papers to legally enter Cuba upon arrival. What happened in the days following the ship's departure sets the stage for the war which had only just begun. Participants will move through a lesson from start to finish that they can take into their classroom on Monday morning. The sailing of the St. Louis is one of the answers to 'why didn't the Jews do anything?' In short, some did. This harrowing story of hope, loss, and desperation comes to life through video, diary, and apology. Participants will see this activity through to the summative assignment where they are tasked to create a representation of the points of view of each of the nations involved.
