Teaching in a Catholic School: Practical Ways to Build Catholic Culture
Thursday February 6, 2025 9:30am - 10:30am MST
This presentation is told in the context of many 'real life stories', laced with humour, as I was an active Catholic school teacher and administrator for most of my teaching career. Over the course of that time, I had many insights and ideas for ways to ensure that the school truly became 'holy ground'. It is presented with many concrete ideas that will make a real difference in the implementation and building up of the Catholic culture in your school community within the framework of the liturgical year. These ideas are easy to implement, to permeate throughout the school, yet based in sound theological roots from masters level training and real life experience.

Thursday February 6, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
The term bullying has earned its buzzword status in this generation and seems to be met all too often with eyerolls and “tattle-tale” tut-tuts. But it’s still very much a dynamic impacting our students and schools…in both the kids and the adults. Bullying is alive and well, and as we all know has consequences in the classroom, the staffroom, the community and the connected world. It has an impact on mental health, belief systems, development and interactions in all settings of our lives, and so we need to understand it. This session teaches what bullying is and isn’t, how it’s changed, and how we can best respond in discipline, support, and society.

The Educational Leadership at the Intersections of Gender is a bilingual project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and co-led by academics (UofA) and professional bodies (ATA, CASS). This research project aimed to investigate the effect of factors such as leaves and care taking roles and the impact of gender and intersectionalities on the career progression of women educators. We first gathered data through an anonymous online survey and then through focus groups. Our data confirmed what we have long known, the progression of women through the teaching profession is significantly different than men and reinforced the importance of bringing women to the policymaking process. As the late justice Ruth Baden Ginsburg said, "Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn't be that women are the exception." With that in mind, our workshop will be dedicated to both presenting our research findings in an interactive manner, and to hosting a collaborative dialogue around policy-oriented questions and personal experiences with career progression. The Alberta based research is the first step to what we hope becomes a nation-wide project, which will improve the live experiences of women as they move through the teaching profession.

From Fake News to Fact Finders: Empowering Student Decision Making and Science Literacy EVENTBRITE TICKET!!
Thursday February 6, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
With social media, news outlets, and community members chiming in on topics like climate change and the pandemic, it’s no wonder why many students are left trying to piece together what’s true and what’s false, let alone try to make sound decisions based on the information they’re receiving. Our hope as educators is that we can equip and empower our students with the skills necessary to navigate this world, especially in times of urgency and of uncertainty. When it comes to science related topics, educators play a crucial role in providing the necessary tools and skills to bolster their scientific literacy, so that they can feel confident talking about these topics, but also in making crucial decisions in their day to day lives.

Nutrition, fitness and health habits for a successful school year
Thursday February 6, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
Typically the way that my presentations works is that I pre ask questions to the population that will be attending - or ask at the beginning of the presentation and answers the questions - it gets everyone involved and interested. From there I build the presentation on nutrition, wellness and fitness to answer the questions that have been asked - I love a podcast style format where one speaker ask me the questions and it becomes a conversation between 2 individuals instead of a presentation and from experience it makes the talk more engaging and successful.

“The Good Life” Redefined
Thursday February 6, 2025 11:00am - 12:00pm MST
What does it mean to live "the good life"? Drawing on the latest psychological wellbeing research, this session challenges conventional notions and pressures about what we “should” be doing and reminds us that pursuits of wellbeing, happiness, and the so-called “good life” are not one-size-fits-all. But what does this mean for our everyday lives and careers? How do we cut through the noise to activate more personalized pathways to fulfillment? You’ll leave with science-backed and life-tested insights you can activate immediately in your life and work, including how to shift from languishing (that “blah” feeling many of us get stuck in) to truly living your own aligned version of the good life – not someone else’s. If you’ve been craving more aliveness and wellbeing (without the guilt!) – this session is for you.

Southern-African Music for Children
Thursday February 6, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm MST
Having moved to Canada from Namibia in 2008, Garth Prince sought ways to teach traditional African music to his Canadian-born children. He discovered that many children were captivated by the energy and rhythms of southern Africa, which led him to spend the next decade developing strategies to make this music more accessible. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, Garth is grateful for the educators who supported him throughout his journey. In this session, he will share what he has learned, teach a song, and provide access to tutorial videos that participants can bring back to their students.

“Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination.”—Fitzhugh Dodson Goal setting, dreaming, and planning for the future are key necessities for wellness. I have always felt the most joy and true happiness when I’ve set my sights on a goal and made a plan on how to get there. Just after COVID knocked us all on our butts, I decided to create a Vision Board. I needed something to kick start my joy again after that helpless and hopeless season started to pass. I cannot stress how uplifting this practice became! Suddenly a imperceptible weight lifted from my shoulders and I felt my old self begin to reappear! In this session, we will briefly look at the different types of Vision Boards and spend some quality time creating our own with provided supplies.

La langue du Michif
Thursday February 6, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
Michif is a mixed language, derived mainly from Cree and French. This workshop is an educational approach that allows teachers to integrate Métis languages, knowledge and perspectives into their teaching. This workshop is intended for teachers who wish to develop and apply basic knowledge about First Peoples for the benefit of all students (EQS 5), but who have difficulty navigating the range of resources available. By exploring the web resources of the Michif Awakening Kit, participants will discover the mechanisms of this language, but above all they will see how the use of Michif educational resources can make it possible to achieve a multitude of learning outcomes in the program (in French, arts, social studies, science, well-being), while working towards reconciliation. Specifically, teachers will explore the various resources available on the website. On the practical side, participants will work to adapt the available resources to their needs, in line with recommended good practices for making authentic and respectful use of the knowledge shared by Elders. Participants will leave the workshop with access to multiple lesson plans and corresponding resources.

Every Child Deserves a Team: Layering Meeting Structures to Support the Whole Child
Friday February 7, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST
Does it feel like you're talking about the same students over and over? Are you wanting to take your PLC's and RTI efforts to the next level? Do your team meetings lack the clarity and purpose you're looking for as a leader? In this session, Lorna will articulate, with multiple school samples and resources, the value of layering collaborative structures and processes within a school and how the introduction of a very intentional collaborative team meeting can work to respond to the needs of students collaboratively, while increasing the instructional capacity of everyone involved. In essence, schools reduce the number of meetings about students...by adding one more! By intentionally layering and connecting our PLC and RTI structures, we leverage and maximize the most powerful resource in any school for supporting the whole child - the teachers working within our building! Come learn what thousands of schools have learned about these purposeful collaborative structures and processes to ensure every student is supported by a team. Unmasking Racism: Redefining Education
Friday February 7, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST
This thought provoking session will delve into the complexities of racism and anti-racism in education. Inspired by Dr. Beverly Tatum's analogy of the walkway towards addressing racism. You will gain a foundational comprehension of how racism is deeply interwoven into society’s fabric and our education system, often concealed from view. It is this concealed nature that necessitates our active pursuit of anti-racism. We'll embark on a journey to challenge common misconceptions like "colorblindness" and the notion of a pure meritocracy. We aim to dispel the belief that racism is a thing of the past or confined to isolated incidents of hatred. Instead, we'll cultivate a profound comprehension of its ever-present, pervasive nature that affects us all in varying, sometimes imperceptible, ways. Some may be acutely aware of its presence, while others remain oblivious. The aim is clear: to ensure equitable treatment for all so that every child can access the same high-quality education and have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential. Together, we will work towards creating a more just and inclusive educational future for all. You'll leave with an understanding of how racism is deeply woven into society's fabric, with a focus on actively practicing anti-racism to ensure equitable treatment for all in our schools. You'll gain practical tools, knowledge, and strategies, empowering you to be a better ally to your students and colleagues. Join me as we unmask the hidden dimensions of racism and commit to a future where every child's potential is nurtured.

Quelle est ma classe? Partie A
Friday February 7, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST

Expressive Writing for Wellbeing
Friday February 7, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST
In this session you will be introduced to a writing technique called proprioceptive writing, based on the work of Linda Trichter Metcalf PhD and Tobin Simon PhD. This session is open to anyone, you do not need to be a writer to enjoy or benefit from it. We’ll look at some of the research behind expressive writing, and then have a chance to practice the method. Writing is private and there is no expectation for participants to share any of their work. This method can be used within classes, but it is also an excellent resource for participants to use to support their own emotional well-being.

Stop Tiering Your Students! Establishing, Refining and Utilizing a Continuum of Supports EVENTBRITE TICKET!!
Friday February 7, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
Over the past number of years, with the growth of tiered response systems in schools, educational organizations have become proficient at tiering students for intensifying levels of support. When done well, it ensures a systematic approach to supporting a greater number of students and maximizing resources. When not done well, it can lead to higher levels of support becoming overwhelmed and resources stretched thin as more and more students are identified as requiring intensified supports. The great news is there is a better way that comes when you STOP tiering students! This session will provide an explanation of the paradigm shift from tiering students to tiering supports and share considerations when establishing, refining and utilizing a continuum of supports in schools and districts that has long standing impact for teachers and students.

Quelle est ma classe? - Partie B
Friday February 7, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST

What's happened to our students and how can we help?
Friday February 7, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
What's happened to our students and how can we help? The benefits of a trauma-informed approach (TIA) in K-12 schools. This is a session designed to help teachers view their students through a new lens. When teachers can change their perceptions of student behaviour, they can more successfully navigate the many different challenges they face in the classroom. Students arrive in our classroom having experienced a wide range of trauma. Teachers need to ensure they are working with these students in a supportive and caring way. You should leave this session with a new understanding of behaviours, as well as armed with a variety of easy-to-implement strategies and a list of recommended resources.

Join authors Douglas Sanderson (Amo Binashii) and Andrew Stobo Sniderman for a discussion about their acclaimed book, Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation. A Reasonable Act of Worship | understanding & teaching the connection between worship & purity
Friday February 7, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm MST
We live in a society where the word purity has become entangled in a gray area of post modernism & self-indulgence. Teaching authentic worship goes beyond just a faith or catechism class in school. It needs to be integrated into our systems as a whole. Accomplishing this requires a paradigm shift in both our mentality and our approach. Drawing from concepts laid out in his book, Peter guides us through the beginnings of what this shift might look like. Participants are invited to reflect, to journey, and to share.

Are you mindful of avoiding tokenism and teaching Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being with respect and authenticity? If so, then this is the session for you! Amanda Green will share her journey in learning from Indigenous people and appropriately implementing a variety of lessons that you can then use either on your own, or with guidance of a community member. How to Say No
Friday February 7, 2025 12:45pm - 1:45pm MST
Teachers give a lot of themselves, so preserving energy is an important skill. With increased demands on our time and resources, decisions must be made to manage stress and avoid burning out. In this session, we’ll examine why it can be so hard to say no. We’ll cover handling the disappointment of others, strategies for setting and maintaining stronger relationship boundaries, and creating more space to enjoy life instead of feeling “crazy busy.” Prioritize your own mental health by learning how to say no with kindness and without guilt so your students can see how it’s done.

Laurie McIntosh - Keynote Session
Friday February 7, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
Taking a closer look at the strategies, stories and definitions of "success" that inspire and connect us in our community as 'Teachers These Days'. Laurie will hold a discussion and reflection around what we have been taught is a "good" teacher. We will examine in depth the stories we have been told about what makes a successful teacher, what elements within our teacher culture need to change and spend time discussing safe places to land in these trying times. This session is all about the connection. Teachers can expect to leave with strategies especially surrounding connection to themselves, their school community, their learners and the families they serve. What people will remember most about you, your legacy, will have so much more to do with a felt sense than it ever will with words or numbers. It will remind our teachers that their job is to shine the incredible light that brought them into this profession in the first place. It will remind them that whatever you got on any given day is (more than) enough which is something all teachers deserve to hear right now.

Friday February 7, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
Whiteboarding can be defined by some as an effective classroom strategy that uses non-permanent learning surfaces to actively engage students in the learning process. This strategy provides students with ongoing evaluation and quick feedback that guides understanding and comprehension of subject matter. It also allows students to engage in a collaborative learning process with their peers enabling them to learn from each other. This session will introduce you to multiple methods on how you can use whiteboarding in your science classroom. Participants will experience how to use non-permanent learning surfaces in their science classrooms in a variety of ways. They will learn that whiteboarding is an effective student engagement activity that fosters student dialogue, engages students in a collaborative learning environment, models problem solving strategies and helps students achieve a deeper conceptual understanding of scientific concepts.

Financial Wellness – it’s more than just investments!
Friday February 7, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
Why is it important to prioritize our financial well-being? Being financially prepared is essential because it's not just about money; it's a fundamental aspect of overall wellness. Neglecting financial health can lead to stress and affect mental well-being, making it harder to navigate life's challenges. For educators, who often prioritize the needs of others over their own, focusing on personal wellness, including financial wellness, is imperative. Studies show that 40% of financially unstable Canadians experience stress related to their finances. This stress permeates their work life, with 88% reporting frequent worries and 49% admitting it affects their job performance. But what if there were simple tools that could alleviate this stress? This session aims to provide such tools, offering practical steps that can be implemented easily. In this session, you will learn how to identify any financial gaps that you may have, how to prepare for the unknown (financial emergencies and unexpected costs), and how to plan for your expected financial needs (home downpayment, kids' post-secondary tuition, additional retirement funds). We will explore investment options, look at market dynamics, and using our core strategies we will set you up to make informed financial decisions. Being financially prepared isn't just about avoiding financial pitfalls; it's about building resilience and understanding and securing peace of mind in the face of life's uncertainties.

Friday February 7, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
After we risk, we must learn how to rest so we can build resilience. In this session, we’ll do a deep dive into the scarcity mindset so prevalent in our culture. We’ll talk about rhythm, and the stories we tell ourselves about productivity and worth being intertwined. Learning how to safely take risks, and then rest up and recover, leads to improved mental health and better coping strategies. If you are feeling bone weary and in need of hope and rest, this session is for you. Come practice these critical life skills so you can show your students how it’s done.
