As regular users of media and technology, teachers and students are confronted with a pervasive stream of social and political opinion that is often misleading and not based in thorough research. The new elementary Social Studies curriculum provides teachers with an opportunity to delve into research processes - "design and implementation, evaluating information to determine validity and draw conclusions, hypothesize next steps and action, and apply ethical practices in research" (New Learn Alberta, Social Studies curriculum, Grade 5, 2024). This session will explain the five key concepts of Media Literacy - access, analyze, compose, reflect, and take action (Renee Hobbs, Media Education Lab). It will demonstrate how these five concepts are tied to the new Social Studies curriculum for Division 2, in the form of ready-to-use lessons for the classroom.
