By the end of this workshop, participants will: Understand the Role of Schools as Sanctuaries Explore the concept of schools as safe and inclusive spaces for fostering belonging and support. Identify the benefits of creating sanctuary-like environments for students, educators, and families. Recognize Barriers to Belonging Examine common challenges, such as exclusion, discrimination, and trauma, that impact students' sense of belonging. Reflect on how school policies and practices may unintentionally hinder helping and inclusion. Develop Strategies for Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces Learn practical approaches for fostering emotional, physical, and psychological safety in schools. Explore how restorative practices, social-emotional learning (SEL), and trauma-informed care contribute to belonging. Enhance Skills for Building Supportive Communities Understand how to cultivate a culture of care, empathy, and mutual respect among students, staff, and families. Gain tools for initiating and sustaining peer mentoring, inclusive activities, and supportive leadership. Promote Culturally Responsive Practices Learn how to celebrate diversity and incorporate culturally relevant teaching to support marginalized groups. Address systemic inequities and foster equity and inclusion. Create Action Plans for Sustainable Change Collaborate on action steps to transform schools into sanctuaries of helping and belonging. Commit to ongoing reflection and adaptation to meet the evolving needs of the school community.
