Media Literacy in the Alberta Elementary Classroom
Thursday February 6, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST
Misinformation, fake news, AI in the classroom, cyberbullying, digital citizenship, cell phone use and texting...these are just a few of the many media and technology concerns of parents and teachers alike. Elementary teachers wrestle daily with how to teach their students the skills they need to manage the pervasive and constantly-evolving digital world in which they learn and live. This session will explain what Media Literacy is and identify its key components. It will demonstrate how it can be tied into the new ELAL curriculum. It will offer sample lessons created using the 5 key competencies developed by Renee Hobbs (Media Education Lab) for Divisions 1 and 2 students. And finally, teachers are invited to express their concerns and ask questions regarding media and technology use in the elementary classroom.

Media Literacy and the New Elementary Social Studies Curriculum
Thursday February 6, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
As regular users of media and technology, teachers and students are confronted with a pervasive stream of social and political opinion that is often misleading and not based in thorough research. The new elementary Social Studies curriculum provides teachers with an opportunity to delve into research processes - "design and implementation, evaluating information to determine validity and draw conclusions, hypothesize next steps and action, and apply ethical practices in research" (New Learn Alberta, Social Studies curriculum, Grade 5, 2024). This session will explain the five key concepts of Media Literacy - access, analyze, compose, reflect, and take action (Renee Hobbs, Media Education Lab). It will demonstrate how these five concepts are tied to the new Social Studies curriculum for Division 2, in the form of ready-to-use lessons for the classroom. Lesson plans and handouts will be provided.
