De l’arithmétique à l’algèbre - 1ère à 9e année
Thursday February 6, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST

Paint by Numbers: Frameworks for Building Mathematical Understanding (K-9)
Thursday February 6, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST
We develop our Frameworks over the years, through education, exploration, and experience, creating an ever-more complex map of How Things Work that lets us be fluent with the ideas and operations we know, and helps us to learn and adapt to the new things we encounter. They help us become confident, powerful learners ready to take on new challenges. This session will explore a few of the key Big Ideas of Number, and examine how to Frame those ideas in ways that Learners can use to build increasingly-complex understandings of Number.. We will follow the learner as those initial tools and tactics are leveraged into helping to develop increasingly complex ways of handling number, from simply counting and organizing to developing Additive thinking, Multiplicative thinking, and to dealing with ever-increasing complexity in the numbers themselves… bigger numbers, decimals, fractions and integers.

What Should Every Junior High Teacher Know About the New Grades 4-6 Math Curriculum?
Thursday February 6, 2025 9:00am - 10:00am MST
So, you aren’t teaching a new curriculum yet but what have Grades 4-6 students learned that you already do? How might that change what a current 7 or 8 classroom could look like? Come join a fast paced session on what’s new - old and somewhere inbetween. Try some of the manipulatives that students will be familiar with - how might you implement these in your class now? How might assessment look different? Put your track shoes on and join in the exploration. Participants will receive access to support documents outlining the changes.

Intervention in Math: Getting the Big Ideas Right
Thursday February 6, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
Some things aren't a big deal… you can get them wrong now, and yet still do well on everything else. But other things are so important that their loss means the learner is handicapped at learning new ideas. Sometimes, you can't let weak understandings slide. Enter the need for targeted Intervention in Math. Based on the work of Marilyn Burns, Do The Math is a series of targeted interventions, aligned with a Mathematical Learning Progression, that leverages the power of Manipulatives, Models, Direct and Guided Instruction, along with the engaging power of games to help remediate and strengthen student performance where it counts... on the Big Ideas of Math. Use these ideas for Intervention, Remediation, or everyday Instruction to build strong learners that leverage strong mathematical foundations to tackle new situations.

Math Vocabulary - What Exactly is the Correct Term in Our New Math Grades 7-10?
Thursday February 6, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am MST
So many of the terms we use each day in mathematics classes are the very concepts we want our students to learn and make connections with. Using the appropriate terminology can provide clarity and consistency. Do your grade partners use the same language as you? Would students entering different math classrooms in your school hear the same language? Come and check out some of the math terminology we have for you to engage with.

Are You Sure? Questions that Build Thinking Classrooms (Math).
Thursday February 6, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm MST
Simple questions can lead students to think deeply about how they got to an answer and often leads them to explain their process. Effective questioning strategies and sample questions will be modeled and highlighted by the presenter throughout the session as participants engage in a variety of math games. Asking students the right kind of question often leads them to retrace the steps they took to come up with an answer and sometimes self-correct or refine their answer along the way. A secondary focus of the presentation will be on mental math and estimation strategies and activities. The math games presented use regular cards and dice, commonly found at “dollar stores” and department stores. Participants will gain the knowledge, skill and confidence to embed higher level thinking questions throughout their math games classes (and hopefully, other classes as well).

First, we Understand: Visual Algebra and Trig Origami (9-12)
Thursday February 6, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm MST
All Math starts as a picture in your mind… a way to see the problem, a way to hold the numbers still while you look for the relationships that you can use to answer the question: Why? That simple word, the repetitive question of every three-year-old, is the key to unlocking the beauty of mathematics, but somehow, by High School, math is too often more about "finding answers" than about finding the reason why. From the exciting beginnings of Early Numeracy, where we see the magic of pattern and order unfold, math becomes a race to use algorithms, to apply formulas, to follow rules, to show your work, and to try mightily to avoid those costly 'stupid' mistakes... It doesn't have to be that way. As we move from more concrete to more abstract, for our learners to keep up with the shifts, they must do more than blindly try to match the ‘right’ algorithms and solution methods to the 'right' problems … … But First, we Understand

Games Aren't Just for the Young - They Teach!
Thursday February 6, 2025 11:30am - 12:30pm MST
Getting students excited about their learning and engaging them are great stepping stones to having them deepen their own learning. A well crafted engagement activity can serve as a replacement for the traditional set of questions in a textbook. Your presenters both taught PAT/DIP courses so we understand the value of time and the pressures of getting through it all! Come join us as we share some activities that you can take back and implement in your own classrooms.

Mastering Multiplication and Place Value – Upper Elementary
Thursday February 6, 2025 2:00pm - 3:00pm MST
Multiplication and Place Value games and strategies for upper elementary students will be shared and modeled by the presenter throughout the session. Participants will be able to use the games and strategies from the session immediately back in their classrooms. The games and strategies presented mostly utilize simple cards and dice as manipulatives for engaging, hands-on learning and practice of these two extremely important areas of upper elementary math. They also apply the most up-to-date findings in brain research regarding effective ways to instill learning into permanent memory (mastery). The presenter will model and highlight easy and effective ways to manage the manipulatives and implement the games and strategies into classrooms without extra work by the teachers. Easy and effective differentiation and assessment strategies including assessment tools will be shared during the session and in the extensive handout that will be provided for download before and after the session.
