The use of performance assessments in the chemistry laboratory present unique opportunities for formative assessment. They are authentic ways for students to demonstrate their abilities and can positively affect students’ attitudes toward the lab, their academic achievement, and upon the overall environment of the classroom. When used in conjunction with student self-assessment checklists performance assessments can also promote metacognitive activity. This session will present how to administer performance assessments of five basic lab skills and the benefits to the classroom that result. The lab skills that will be discussed are measuring mass using an electronic balance, measuring volume using a graduated cylinder, lighting a Bunsen burner, measuring volume using a pipet, and completing one trial of a titration. Although this session focuses on high school chemistry, the ideas discussed could easily be adapted to the physics, biology or general science classroom.

What do Airbnb and UberEats have in common? They are both innovative examples of design thinking, an approach to solving problems that centres humans in its solutions! Integrating design thinking into the classroom has benefits for students and teachers! It can help promote collaboration and community input to come up with effective and creative solutions. More importantly, design thinking can influence minoritized students' engagement with STEM content and pursuit of a STEM career by considering the values, culture, and mindsets that shape their opportunities. In this session, you will get a chance to learn about (and play with) different types of technologies that can help your students build their confidence in design thinking by coding, building, testing and reflecting. For example, learn how Ozobots can be used to help with clean up, and how drones can help with water sampling in sensitive habitats.

Attendees will observe, participate and expereince a variety of flag football skills, drills, modified games and 5vs5 games. I will also touch on some flag football progressions from grade to grade. My goal is for teachers to leave my session equipped to practically implement a successful flag football unit immediately into their PE classes.

This session will be held in Edmonton (91st and 51Ave).

We offer a fun and constructive Ribbon Skirt making class. In this class we have a short video from the owner, explaining how the ribbon Skirt has deep roots and meaning to his family. Sharing the traditions and knowledge is our way of keeping it alive. We walk you through the whole process and you get to go home with a part of our history and the knowledge to spread your teachings onto others. This class is meant for individuals with little or no sewing experience to learn how to make a box style ribbon skirt with 4 ribbons and pockets. Sewing machines, thread, and all materials will be provided. You will be able to pick from any fabrics we carry on our salesfloor at the time of your class. You will be able to pick 4 colours of ribbon. Students may elect to add additional ribbon or select printed ribbon for an upcharge on the day of the class. The box style ribbon skirt is made from two rectangular pieces of fabric. Students will cut their fabric to size and follow along with an in-person instructor, and video steps to help guide the process. They will learn how to make a box style ribbon skirt with pockets from start to finish. Students who aren't able to finish their skirts during the class may elect to take their skirts home to finish, or return to the 49 Dzine Academy workspace during scheduled "maker hours" to finish. Box Style skirts are best for individuals who prefer more room in the hip area when seated. As such, they have a lot of gathering in the hip area.

This session will take place in St. Albert.

Come and learn to make bread! Geared towards Foods 20/30, this session will cover the outcomes in FOD2050: Bread Products and FOD3040: Yeast Products. With the rising cost of groceries, this is a great money saving module to teach in foods. You will learn to make a flat bread, bagels, pizza, buns and fried donuts. You will leave with a variety of bread products and many bread recipes that have been tried and tested. We will learn to make bread dough by hand but also how to use a mixer to help. We will also discuss a variety of bread proofing techniques and where each can be used. You will also leave with the theory component so that you can leave ready to teach these modules. Many of these recipes are easily adaptable to CTF and can be done over more than one day, depending on the length of your class.

Anyone with a little experience in watercolor is welcome to this class. We will be concentrating in creating an 11x15 painting in one day that is perfect for framing. No drawing skill needed, short cuts and tricks will be presented to achieve our goal. Painting smart and painting hard. Easy to follow handout will be given out in the morning.

This presentation is an overview of an action research project on the effects of having students mark their own formative quizzes upon their level of metacognition, attitude and academic achievement. In addition, the reliability of student self-grading, and the potential benefits upon the instructor’s time were also evaluated. Come to this session to hear about how this action research was conducted and the takeaways from this project.

So many of the terms we use each day in mathematics classes are the very concepts we want our students to learn and make connections with. Using the appropriate terminology can provide clarity and consistency. Do your grade partners use the same language as you? This session will use photography and the art of seeing to retrain our brains to live mindfully, aware, and with a depth of observation that will benefit every area of education and life. Through a two year study, McIntyre discovered 5 concepts that resonated through the exceptional football programs of the Raymond Comets, St. Francis Browns of Calgary, Calgary Dinosaurs (80s) , Edmonton Huskies (60s) and Edmonton Eskimos (50s). These programs had a profound impact on the individuals and the communities they served. After interviewing close to one hundred people, Ron acquired an appreciation for the nuances of these highly successful teams. Through storytelling and examples, Ron will unlock the vault and reveal the practices of men such as Gary Deman, Peter Connellan, Dennis Kadatz and Normie Kwong. It is McIntyre’s belief that the best practices of these exemplar programs are timeless and have implications for the classroom as coaching and teaching are intricately intertwined.
